What is CBD?
CBD is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It’s consumption by humans dates back to thousands of years ago, though it was not isolated until 1940. Its complete chemical structure was defined in 1963. Recently CBD has been making a lot of headlines as a natural and non-pharmaceutical supplement that’s known to have many benefits.
CBD doesn’t get you High
Unlike its cousin THC, CBD doesn’t get you high and is non-intoxicating. It doesn’t produce euphoric effect unlike THC. CBD works better in conjunction with other cannabinoids contained within cannabis plants to produce the most benefits.
How does CBD work?
One major explanation for CBD's wide range of potential benefits is the complex way it interacts with our bodies, particularly through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), an internal system made up of endogenous cannabinoids, or endocannabinoids, the receptors that these cannabinoids bind to, and the enzymes that break them down. CBD and other phytocannabinoids, or cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant, bind to cannabinoid receptors when they enter the body, and elicit a wide range of effects, depending on which receptors they activate.

Some people suffering from chronic pain resulting from fibromyalgia have experienced relief after using CBD oil. Using CBD oil has also been found to offer common pain relief and prevent the degeneration of the nervous system. Chronic inflammation, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, leads to many non-infectious diseases like heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, Type 1 Diabetes, and even autoimmune disease. Research shows that CBD can treat inflammation and in turn help alleviate these diseases. In short, CBD helps with pain relief.
Even though CBD has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat anxiety and depression, multiple research shows that CBD oil can help with both problems. CBD has been seen to also reduce stress and help people who suffer with sleep issues. The growing popularity of CBD products as anti-anxiety supplements is backed with plenty of convincing research, though there’s still a long way to go. Several clinical trials with humans are currently underway, but there is already good evidence of CBD’s usefulness for:
Several studies have shown that CBD oil and certain CBD creams have a high potential for treating skin conditions, like eczema, by encouraging abnormal cell death. It also helps regulate the skin’s oil production, thus reducing acne. A biomedical journal published by the American Society for Clinical Investigation, found that CBD helps to lower the production of sebum, partly because of CBD’s anti-inflammatory property. Cannabidiol also contains certain nutrients like vitamin E that help nourish and protect the skin.
